Upli Burj, Bijapur

Upli Burj constructed in 1584, is an another interesting site in Bijapur (State: Karnataka). General Hyder Khan in the service of ruler Ibrahim II built this watch tower.

This is a circular tower measuring 80 ft in height. There are 70 steps leading to the top of the tower where there are 2 canons. This tower is also known as Hyder Burj.

Very unusual tower.;) I guess it must have been quiet some exercise to carry gun powder all the way up there.;)) Or a cannon ball.;))

Good capture of the monument.

I'd be so tired out after climbing those steps I wouldn't be able to fire anything, much less a cannon!

Interesting place and great shot! I suppose the cannons were shot through some kind of portholes...

What a fascinating tower! Always amazes me the incredible buildings/architecture in your country and how long they have been there -- we're such a young country and I find yours and it's history so very fascinating! Thanks as always for sharing the beauty and the history, Rajesh! Have a great week!

An incredible design and no doubt very effective as a watchtower. The constructing of it must have been quite a feat and difficult for those assigned to the task. They would be amazed to know their work has survived all these centuries.

This is an old tower with lots of stories to tell. Interesting. Will try to read more about this tower.

Just got back home here in the Philippines from Little India in Singapore and I had so much learnings about the cultures of India. Eventhough I stayed for only four days, I got to experience piece of India that's worth reminiscing in this lifetime.

Will share more stories through my site.

Thanks for your site. This is inspiring.
