Tiger's Cave, Mahabalipuram

Tiger's Cave is located in a small village Saluvankuppam 5 kms from Mahabalipuram. Don't be surprised, if you do not see neither a tiger nor a small dark den of the tiger.

This is actually a 8th century temple dedicated to Goddess Durga. This was built during the reign of Pallava Kings. The shrine is known by this name as there are series of carved heads of a animal that resembles tiger surrounding the entrance of the shrine.

  1. It looks as if this temple must be approached by water. It is definitely an interesting and unusual temple, but impressive just the same.

  4. you're sure no tiger is hidden behind a pillar? Is the temple on a small island in a pond?

  19. This is an interesting rounded structure unlike most temples I’ve seen here. Not only is it decorated with tigers it also seems to be surrounded by water.

  22. Very interesting to see this. If you have not mentioned, I thought the centre part is a door for the tigers to be released.

Sridhar: No, I did not had enough time to visit the beach.

Sorry, I forgot to mention that this temple is in a low lying area. Hence the water around the temple in the the rainy season. I will update the same in the post soon.

  34. I think it is time you take all of your BEST photos and put them not a book of the ancient temples. They are so amazing...and your writings which accompany them are so informative without being too much. This is a very different one from some of the other you have posted, but in its simplicity it is still awesome. genie
