Karkala, the Jain Thirtha

Karkala is a small town located at a distance of 42 kms from Mangalore. The history of the place dates back to the beginning of the 10th century.

The place was ruled by various dynasties like Alupas, Santaras, Bhairarasas. This place was under Jain rule for around 300 years and hence it was also known as Jain Thirtha.

The first important king was Veera Bhairava, who constructed numerous basadis, temples. The kingdom was prosperous then and overall development of the place took place during the period.

  1. Beautiful green location for a town -- lots of water it looks like (and I have read that many places in India don't have that abundance).
