Jaya Vijaya Gumpha is located on Udayagiri hill in Orissa. This is of the period Mahameghavahana Chedi dynasty during 1st century B.C.
This is a double storeyed rock cut cave having pillared veranda in the upper floor where as the lower floor is without pillars. In the past this cave was used by Jain monks.
The caves are devoid of any sculptural friezes. At the entrance of the upper cave is sculptures of door keepers.

Wonderful rock cuts and carvings!
ReplyDeleteI canot even begin to imagine how hard life must have been for the monks who lived in the cave. They were definitely secluded from the rest of society. It is interesting that there were no sculptures for the monks...just up above. Door keepers...so interesting.

ReplyDelete@Rajesh, you seem to have travelled the best of India. The Udayagiri caves appear truly beautiful. I am sure the ancient people might have put in a lot of effort to make these lovely carvings in black stone. Great share.
