Maruleshwara Temple at Talkad is one of the oldest temple here. Recent excavations have unearthed this temple and some other prominent temples. This temple built sometime between 11th and 12th century by the kings of Ganga Dynasty.
The sanctum of the temple has Shivalinga. The temple is amidst the sand dunes and down in side the protective walls built to save the temples from sand movements. To reach this temple one has to climb down series of steps.
This is a small and simple temple without any sculptural decorations on the exterior walls of the temple like any other temples of that period.

ReplyDeleteIt's an interesting building and unlike the usual temples you see. I like the simplicity of it. How old is it?
ReplyDeleteBeautiful captures! I guess you have posted about this temple before.
ReplyDeleteSeems interesting the temple was covered in sand. Probably a river changed its course at some point in time.

ReplyDeleteAnother most interesting structure! It must feel strange to walk down to a temple rather than up. :)
ReplyDeleteDefinitely simple in design (anywhere, but especially compared to the Temples you usually show us.) Very interesting.
ReplyDeleteJeevan: That is a similar temple at Talkad. Both are different.

ReplyDeleteThis temple built sometime between 11th and 12th century by the kings of Ganga Dynasty. Real treasure .
ReplyDeleteLooks interesting
ReplyDeleteTalakadu as I remember was a small village beside Cauvery, with umpteens of temples mostly Shiva-based, and this particular temple as you said was amidst sand and dunes. We walked through the sand, and on that some may be a km long path, many smaller Shiva temples came, one of them which strikes me is probably Pataleshwar. This place also had some link with Tipu Sultan who had patronised these temples. That has a bit of importance in present conflicts in the region regarding his anti-hindu motives. This series of temples is atleast one witness to Tipu Sultan`s pro-hindu stance. Anyway, those were things of yore and who knows the truth.
ReplyDeleteYou revived the memory, and tons of thanks for that.
This looks a very old temple...nice visiting it here!
ReplyDeleteSuch a small and beautiful temple!
ReplyDeleteGood one!
