Mysore Zoo - Vulturine Guineafowl

Mysore Zoo is the most popular zoo at Mysore in India. There are various wild animals and birds at the zoo. One among them are Vulturine Guineafowl.

Vulturine Guineafowl is a large bird with a round body and small head. It is longer in the wings, neck, legs and tail than other guineafowl.

The adult has a bare blue face and long bare black neck and head. The slim neck projects from a cape of long, glossy, blue and white hackles. The breast is cobalt blue, and the rest of the body plumage is black, finely spangled with white.

  1. Beautiful pictures. I presume, they were domesticated in the past.

  4. It certainly has that "vulture" look! I'm wondering if it cleans up dead stuff?

  5. Very similar to our African Guineas, minus the familiar horn on top.

  6. Interesting bird. I didn't make it to the zoo when I was in Mysore but saw the beautiful palace and an incredible temple nearby.

I leave June 1 for six weeks in India.

    My critter post is at:

  10. What an amazing bird, Rajesh! Its cape of hackles is gorgeous, but its face definitely looks more like a vulture. I didn't know such a bird existed. Thanks for the lesson!

  12. Lovely shots. The feathers are beautiful, but I'm not sure I would call the head/face beautiful.

  13. This is a very unusual-looking bird with such a small head. The colors are pretty, however.

  22. That spangled plumage makes up for the less that beautiful head and neck. Thanks for the idea of going to the zoo for some wild bird photos--a good place to find some exoctics that may never get to see in natural habitat.

  24. A little like a children's book of mixed animals where the pages are split in half and you can mix upper and lower halves at will. Great that you spotted it with all that camouflage.
