Greater Coucal at Karanji Lake, Mysore

Karanji Lake at Mysore is a beautiful lake spread over a area of 55 hectares with many trees all around even in the lake.  



Greater Coucal is a beautiful terrestrial bird. It is a non-parasitic bird also known as Crow Pheasant or Coucal.



Adults are large birds with glossy dark green long tail. It has glossy black-purple head and body with wings that are bright chestnut on upper side, and black on under side. It has black bill and eyes are deep red, legs and feet are dark grey.



It is mostly seen in Asian continent specifically in India, South China, Nepal and Indonesia. They can be seen lives in grassland, at forest edges, near cultivated areas and water. They can be often seen clambering about in vegetation or walking on the ground as they forage for insects, eggs and nestlings of other birds.

Karanji Lake Aviary, Mysore

In the park on the Karanji Lake bed at Mysore an aviary is constructed. It measures 40 m in width, 60 m in length and 20 m in height. It is possibly India's biggest walk-through aviary.



The aviary has an artificial water fall and two small water bodies. 



It has around 40 to 50 birds. Some of them are Hornbills, peacocks, white-peacocks, turkeys, black swans and more. One can also see tortoise here.

Sunbird at Karanji Lake, Mysore

Karanji Lake at Mysore is a beautiful lake spread over a area of 55 hectares with many trees all around even in the lake.  



One such beautiful bird seen here is Purple-rumped SunbirdIt is a tiny bird with dark maroon upper-side with a blue-green crown. The underparts are whitish with dark throat, maroon breast.



They mainly feed on nectar but sometimes take insects.

Purple Swamphen at Karanji Lake, Mysore

Karanji Lake at Mysore is a beautiful lake spread over a area of 55 hectares with many trees all around even in the lake.  



It is one of the favorite haunts of many birds and we spotted one such bird the Purple Swamphen.



These birds have bright plumage and red bill and a large frontal shield. They have red eyes.


They prefer wet areas such as swamps, lake edges and damp pastures. They are often seen in pairs and larger communities.

Brindavan Gardens, Mysore

The Brindavan Gardens is a garden located just 19kms from the heart of Mysore. The garden occupies an area of 60 acres. The garden is maintained by the Cauvery Niravari Nigama, a Government of Karnataka enterprise. The garden is open to general public and a nominal entry-fee is charged.



The work on laying out this garden was started in the year 1927 and completed in 1932. The garden is laid out in 3 terraces which contain water fountains, Ficus trees, foliage plants such as Duranta plumaria and Euphorbia and flowering plants like Celosia, Marigold and bougainvillea.



There is also a lake within the garden with boating facilities available for visitors.  The visitors can enjoy a boat ride around the famous statue of Goddess Kaveri. It is a mesmerizing sight when the whole garden is lit up in the evenings.



This beautiful gardens are laid out below the Krishnaraja Sagar dam built across the river Cauvery. The main attraction of the park is the musical fountain in which bursts of water are synchronized to the music of songs after sunset.

Mysore Zoo - Red-necked Wallaby

Mysore Zoo is the most popular zoo at Mysore in India. There are various wild animals and birds at the zoo. One among them is Red-necked Wallaby



They are medium sized measuring head-body length of 90 cms. Their body is covered with grizzled medium grey soft fur that has a reddish wash across the shoulders. They have black nose and paws, white stripe on the upper lip.



They are mostly seen in eastern parts of Australia, including Tasmania. They feed on grasses, roots, tree leaves, vegetables, sprouts and weeds.

Mysore Zoo is the most popular zoo at Mysore in India. There are various wild animals and birds at the zoo. One among them is Sloth Bear.



They have a lankier built with shaggy coats that form a mane around the face. Their muzzles are thick and long, with small jaws and bulbous snouts with wide nostrils.


   
This bear is a insectivorous bear feed on termites, honeybee colonies, and fruits. They are mostly seen in India and Sri Lanka.

Mysore Zoo - Swamp Deer

Mysore Zoo is the most popular zoo at Mysore in India. There are various wild animals and birds at the zoo. One among them is Swamp Deer or Barasingha. 




It is a medium sized deer with a shoulder height up to 120 cm. Its body is covered with yellowish brown hair above with white spots along the spine. The throat, belly, inside of the thighs and beneath the tail is white. The antlers carry more than three tines.



They graze mainly on grasses and those in the wetland feed commonly on aquatic plants which they obtain by completely submerging its head in the water.



It is one of the species of deer found mostly in Indian subcontinent. Today it has been categorized as vulnerable as their global population has undergone a dramatic decline principally as a result of habitat loss.

Butterfly Park, Mysore

Butterfly Park is located in the nature park surrounding the Karanji Lake at Mysore. So far about 45 species of butterflies have been identified here.



Among many other butterflies we spotted the common Dark Blue Tiger butterfly.



In this park there are various nectar plants are grown that are essential for the breeding of butterflies.



The park is also visited my many birds every now and then.

Mysore Zoo - Tufted Capuchin

Mysore Zoo is the most popular zoo at Mysore in India. There are various wild animals and birds at the zoo. One among them is Tufted Capuchin and and it is native of South America.



It is recognized by its characteristic head coloration, a black or dark brown cap with dark sideburns. The tail is prehensile and helps to control risky movements, assist in changes in direction and to stabilize the Capuchin while feeding in its characteristic seated posture.


They are social animals forming groups of 8 to 15 animals. It has a lifespan of 35 to 40 years.



Fruits are a large part of their diet. Vegetation, seeds, eggs, insects, reptiles, birds and small mammals are also consumed frequently. Wild tufted Capuchin are capable of using tools to open up otherwise inaccessible fruits, the husks of which it cannot open in its teeth or jaws.

Mysore Zoo is the most popular zoo at Mysore in India. There are various wild animals and birds at the zoo. One among them is Indian Bison the Gaur. 



It is the tallest species of wild cattle. It is a strong and massively built with a high convex ridge on the forehead between the horns. There is a prominent ridge on the back. The adult male is dark brown, approaching black when very old. Their average weight of adult is 650 to 1,000 kg.



They are largely confined to evergreen forests or semi-evergreen and moist deciduous forests.

Mysore Zoo is the most popular zoo at Mysore in India. There are various wild animals and birds at the zoo. One among them is Blue-and-gold Macaw.



It is a large South American parrot with blue top parts and yellow under parts. These birds grow 76 to 86 cm. They have blue wings and tail, dark blue chin, golden under parts, and a green forehead. Beaks are black on the white face. It inhabits forests and woodland of tropical South America.

Mysore Zoo - Hog Deer

Mysore Zoo is the most popular zoo at Mysore in India. There are various wild animals and birds at the zoo. One among them is Hog Deer. 



It is named so because of the squat pig-like appearance and by its hog-like movements. It runs through the forests with its head hung low so that it can duck under obstacles instead of leaping over them like most other deer. The young stags are spotted.




The body is long and legs are relatively short. It stands about 70 cm at the shoulder and fur is brown, dark brown in ols stags, wit a yellowish or reddish tinge. It is seen mostly in moist or dry tropical deciduous forest environments.

Mysore Zoo - Cheetah

Mysore Zoo is the most popular zoo at Mysore in India. There are various wild animals and birds at the zoo. One among them is Cheetah.



It is the fastest land animal with a speed of 120 km/h  in short bursts covering distances up to 500 m. It's slender, long-legged body is built for speed. 



It's chest is deep and its waist is narrow with tan in color with black spots all over their body. There are no spots on its white underside, but the tail has spots, which merge to form four to six dark rings at the end. It has a small head with high-set eyes.

Mysore Zoo - Brahminy Duck

Mysore Zoo is the most popular zoo at Mysore in India. There are various wild animals and birds at the zoo. One among them is Brahminy Duck.


This bird looks more like a goose than a duck. It has orange-brown body plumage and a paler head. The wings are white with black flight feathers. Its bill and feet are black.



It can any of this has its food: grain, vegetable shoots, tubers, aquatic insects, molluscs, reptiles. It is a common winter visitor in India. This bird is found in large wetlands, rivers with mud flats and shingle banks.

Karanji Lake, Mysore

Karanji Lake is a beautiful lake located in Mysore. The total area of Karanji lake is 90 hectares. While waterspread area is about 55 hectares, the foreshore area measures about 35 hectares. 



It is one of the favorite haunts of migratory birds like herons and egrets. Some of the common migratory birds found here are Grey Pelican, Painted Stork, Ibis, Cormorant, Egret, etc. which nest on trees in the islands present in the lake.



It is under the control of Mysore Zoo Authority and the lake  has been well maintained. The lake is surrounded by a nature park consisting of a butterfly park and a walk-through aviary.



The entire area surrounding the lake has been transformed into beautiful landscaped gardens. The area is planted with attractive flowering and fruit bearing shrubs and trees.
