INS Khukri Memorial at Diu is a memorial built for the officers & sailors of INS Khukri. It is on a small hillock facing the area in Arabian Sea where the crew of the INS Khukri fought valiantly thirty-five years ago.
It was a Blackwood-class frigate that was sunk off the coast of Diu that fell prey to three torpedoes fired at her by a Pakistani Submarine during the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971.
This was the first warship sunk in action by a submarine since World War II. It remains the post-Independence Indian navy's only warship to be lost in war to date.
Captain Mahendra Nath Mulla Mahavir Chakra of the Indian Navy, the then Commanding Officer of the ship, chose to go down with the warship. She sank down on 9th December with her a crew of 18 Officers and 176 sailors.

Historical stories and facts like this make me want to cry. All wars, how large or small, are tragic. The Commander was a true man to his men and to his ship. He died in honor as did the rest of the crew. This is a lovely memorial though it makes me so sad.
war is to powerfull if i may say so.... that ship will be to
that is nice :)
So very sad -- like all wars! A beautiful memorial, however, and I enjoyed seeing and reading your post for the day, Rajesh! Thank you for sharing. I do hope you and your family have a lovely weekend!!
A lovely memorial.
A wonderful memorial! Happy Friday, enjoy your weekend!
What a tragedy ... it's a beautiful memorial.
Happy weekend!
A lovely memorial
Thanks for sharing the history of this memorial. I love the fretwork reflection I can see.
A poignant tribute in memorium. It is good to remember.
nice memorial
lovely.
Looks like it was quite a large ship. The ship I served on in the Australian Navy was torpedoed & sunk as a dive wreck off the coast of Western Australia after she was decommissioned. Lovely Memorial to the Officers & Crew who lost their lives serving their country.
I do believe that khukri is the most popular weapon being used by Gurkha Regimental army.
nice clicks :-)
Wow amazing place. Nicely weaved with apt snaps Rajesh.
