Big Banyan Tree, Bangalore

The Big Banyan Tree at Kethohalli is about 28 kms from Bangalore city. This tree is more than 400 years old and it is considered to be 4th biggest Banyan tree in the World.

This tree now lives without its main trunk. The main tree has over the years spread out widely with several acrial roots.

With thousands of such roots spread out, the tree covers an area of 3 acres and entire area is covered with acrial roots.

The present crown of the tree has a circumference about 120 mts and the highest branch rises to about 95 feets.

The tree has been a favorite place for tourists. On the weekends lot of people visit this place. Apart from people this place also has lot of monkeys.

Great knowing about this place and exists of this big banyan tree! There’s also a big banyan tree in my area called Adyar, named Adayar Aalamaram (Banyan tree) inside the Theosophical Society and it is believed to 450 years old and spread over 40,000 sq ft. It is also one of the largest trees in the world.

Nice photos!

A tree without a main trunk. I learned something today. I think I have read where aspen trees have a similar root system.

So basically it's just one tree... if I understood it correctly. Quite interesting that tree is.
