Birdwatching at Sinhagad

Sinhagad is an important fortress located at a distance of 30 kms from Pune. The fort is perched on an isolated cliff of the Bhuleswar range of the Sahyadri Mountains.

During our excursion to this fort in the picturesque location, we were dumbstruck by the beauty of the surroundings. I had least idea I will be able to see any birds at a such height. Suddenly we saw a small bird flying around.

It sat on the branch of a isolated leafless tree extending out from the edge of the hill where the fort was located. I was more than happy to snap it.

Sinhagad, the Lion Fort

Sinhagad is an important fortress located at a distance of 30 kms from Pune. The fort is perched on an isolated cliff of the Bhuleswar range of the Sahyadri Mountains. It is on a steep hill that rises to a height of 1312 meters above sea level. This fort was earlier known by the name Kondana Fort.

Because of the natural protection provided by the steep hill, the walls and bastions were constructed at only key places. It was known to be one of the toughest fort that could be captured by anybody in a battle.

One of the most famous battle associated with this fort is the one fought by Tanaji, a general of Shivaji in 1670. Tanaji and his men scaled a steep cliff leading to the fort with the help of a monitor lizard. At the top, a fierce battle took place and Tanaji lost his life, but won the fort.
After hearing about his death, Shivaji said "Won the Fort, lost the Lion". In honor of Tanaji the fort was renamed as "Sinhagad" meaning "The Lion Fort".

In the above image one can not see the height at which fort is located as the view is obstructed by other hills. The steps to the fort seen in the second are the new additions.

Tanaji, the Lion

Tanaji Malusare was a brave warrior and a leader in the army of Maharaja Shivaji, founder of the Maratha Empire in the 17th century. He is known for the battle he fought to recapture the fort Kondana near Pune for his King Shivaji.

Kondana fort is at the top stiff cliff and is known to impossible to be captured by using force. He planned to storm the extremely well-guarded fort in the middle of the night. Tanaji and his troops scaled the fort with the help of monitor lizards (the iguana). They fought a fierce battle to recapture the fort. He fought with another brave man Udaybhan Rathod from the opposition ranks even after he lost his shield. It is known that Tanaji fought Udaybhan by tying a cloth over one of his hands and using it to ward off Uday Bhan's sword attacks. Tanaji and his men managed to capture the fort, but Tanaji lost his life in the battle.

Maharaja Shivaji renamed the fort from Kondana to Sinhagad in his honor. His words after hearing about the demise of Tanaji were "Gad ala pan Sinha gela" He meant "Won the Fort, lost the Lion"

This statue is located in the
Sinhagad.
