Karanji Lake at Mysore is a beautiful lake with many trees and plants all around the lake. In the park is an walk-through aviary with beautiful birds.

Greater Coucal at Karanji Lake, Mysore

Karanji Lake at Mysore is a beautiful lake spread over a area of 55 hectares with many trees all around even in the lake.  



Greater Coucal is a beautiful terrestrial bird. It is a non-parasitic bird also known as Crow Pheasant or Coucal.



Adults are large birds with glossy dark green long tail. It has glossy black-purple head and body with wings that are bright chestnut on upper side, and black on under side. It has black bill and eyes are deep red, legs and feet are dark grey.



It is mostly seen in Asian continent specifically in India, South China, Nepal and Indonesia. They can be seen lives in grassland, at forest edges, near cultivated areas and water. They can be often seen clambering about in vegetation or walking on the ground as they forage for insects, eggs and nestlings of other birds.

Karanji Lake Aviary, Mysore

In the park on the Karanji Lake bed at Mysore an aviary is constructed. It measures 40 m in width, 60 m in length and 20 m in height. It is possibly India's biggest walk-through aviary.



The aviary has an artificial water fall and two small water bodies. 



It has around 40 to 50 birds. Some of them are Hornbills, peacocks, white-peacocks, turkeys, black swans and more. One can also see tortoise here.

Sunbird at Karanji Lake, Mysore

Karanji Lake at Mysore is a beautiful lake spread over a area of 55 hectares with many trees all around even in the lake.  



One such beautiful bird seen here is Purple-rumped SunbirdIt is a tiny bird with dark maroon upper-side with a blue-green crown. The underparts are whitish with dark throat, maroon breast.



They mainly feed on nectar but sometimes take insects.

Purple Swamphen at Karanji Lake, Mysore

Karanji Lake at Mysore is a beautiful lake spread over a area of 55 hectares with many trees all around even in the lake.  



It is one of the favorite haunts of many birds and we spotted one such bird the Purple Swamphen.



These birds have bright plumage and red bill and a large frontal shield. They have red eyes.


They prefer wet areas such as swamps, lake edges and damp pastures. They are often seen in pairs and larger communities.

Butterfly Park, Mysore

Butterfly Park is located in the nature park surrounding the Karanji Lake at Mysore. So far about 45 species of butterflies have been identified here.



Among many other butterflies we spotted the common Dark Blue Tiger butterfly.



In this park there are various nectar plants are grown that are essential for the breeding of butterflies.



The park is also visited my many birds every now and then.

Karanji Lake, Mysore

Karanji Lake is a beautiful lake located in Mysore. The total area of Karanji lake is 90 hectares. While waterspread area is about 55 hectares, the foreshore area measures about 35 hectares. 



It is one of the favorite haunts of migratory birds like herons and egrets. Some of the common migratory birds found here are Grey Pelican, Painted Stork, Ibis, Cormorant, Egret, etc. which nest on trees in the islands present in the lake.



It is under the control of Mysore Zoo Authority and the lake  has been well maintained. The lake is surrounded by a nature park consisting of a butterfly park and a walk-through aviary.



The entire area surrounding the lake has been transformed into beautiful landscaped gardens. The area is planted with attractive flowering and fruit bearing shrubs and trees.
