It is named so because of the squat pig-like appearance and by its hog-like movements. It runs through the forests with its head hung low so that it can duck under obstacles instead of leaping over them like most other deer. The young stags are spotted.
The body is long and legs are relatively short. It stands about 70 cm at the shoulder and fur is brown, dark brown in ols stags, wit a yellowish or reddish tinge. It is seen mostly in moist or dry tropical deciduous forest environments.

This are medium size animals. The name Brow-antlered deer is because of their uniquely distinctive antlers, measuring 100–110 cm in length with extremely long brow tine. The two tines form a continuous curve at right angles to the closely set pedicels. The antlers of the opposite sides are unsymmetrical with respect to each other.
Their coats, rough and coarse and color varies as per season: summer - reddish-brown, winter - dark brown. The tail is short in length. They feed on a variety of water living plants, grasses, herbaceous plants, and shoots.

It has thin legs and a robust body that slopes down from the shoulder. Adult males have a grey to bluish-grey coat, while the females and young are tawny brown in color The tips of the long, tufted tail and of the ears are black. They also possess a tubular-shaped "pennant" of long, coarse hair on the midsection of the throat.
Only the males have two black, conical horns, arising close together just behind the eyes. The horns project upwards, but are slightly curved forward; they measure between 15 and 24 centimeters.
They live in grasslands and woodlands where they eat grasses, leaves, buds, and fruit. They avoid dense forest and prefer the plains and low hills with shrubs. In India, it can be seen mostly in central and northern part.

There are several National Parks in Madhya Pradesh. Prominent among them are: Kanha National Park, Bandhavgarh National Park, Madhav National Park. Since it is required minimum 1 day time to enjoy the wildlife, landscape we had not planned our time for the park in this trip.
Madhav National Park established in 1958 is 156 sq. km in area. This park is open through out the year. The forest here is dry forest across the hilly region and flat grasslands around the lakes. The animals most seen in the park are Deer, nilgai, Sambar, Antelope, Blackbuck, Leopard, Langur. Apart from these there are other animals like Tiger, Heyna are also present here.
We got a glimpse of wildlife while boating in the lake on the edge of National Park. The above shot is taken while boat is moving.
