Light House, Mahabalipuram

The Lighthouse at Mahabalipuram is built in 1900 on a rock nearby to Mahishasura Mardhini Cave Temple. It is constructed in such a way that it blends very well with the 7th and 9th century Pallava cave temples around it.

This is a 26m high circular stone masonry tower. The exterior surface is natural and unpainted to blend with surroundings. The light on tower was commissioned for the first time on March 1901.

The stone tower at the top has a lantern dome painted red in color.

Why had I never thought that your country would have needed lighthouses? It looks much like the ones we see, many of which of course were built around the same time....but you are right that it blends very well with the much much earlier architecture. I love learning from your blog!

The lighthouse does blend with its surroundings very nicely. I'm glad they constructed it in that manner.

Lovely tower! The tower itself blends well with the much older buildings, almost seamlessly fitting into the landscape!

this is practically "new" from 1900 compared to all the beautiful temples you feature that are centuries old.

COMPADRES

Shadows above me,
Shadows below;
Some shadows swift and
Some shadows slow;
All of these shadows,
It’s plain to see,
Are my compadres—
Sweet company!
